A common question that we get asked at Anacortes Plumbing is how to know when you need a full upgrade to your plumbing system. Everyone’s home plumbing is completely different, so we normally can’t give a direct answer right away; however, there are a few signs that you can look for!
Read today’s blog post to get the full scoop on some red flags 🚩. We are Anacortes Plumbing, one of the top plumbing companies in the Anacortes, Washington area. We offer our services to the Skagit Island, Mount Vernon, and San Juan County areas.
Age Of Your Home
If your home was built in the past forty years or more AND still has its original plumbing intact, this is generally a sign that your plumbing situation needs to at least be assessed.
It should be noted that most homes built four decades back used different materials in their plumbing systems. Galvanized steel, iron, and lead were the norm back then.
While galvanized steel and iron each come with their own set of issues (read one of our past blog posts where talk about issues with galvanized pipes), lead pipes in your home should be addressed immediately. Lead is extremely toxic, even in small portions!
Most older homes will have exposed pipes. This is actually a good thing since it allows you to examine them closely and look for anything that looks “off” in the piping, such as flaking, leaks, lumps, etc.
Color Changes In Your Water
Discolored water can be a major warning sign.
If you notice that your water is discolored, step one is DON’T drink it!!
Step two is to assess the color. If the water is a yellow, red, or orange, you most likely have rust in your pipes.
This goes back to our first sign. You most likely have older pipes, and/or the pipes aren’t made out of the optimal, safe material.
If your water is black, this could mean that there is mold in your pipes! Needless to say, you should contact your plumber ASAP 😅.
If your water pipes are green, there could be algae in your pipes.
These are all signs in your water showing that your plumbing pipes are due for replacement or repair immediately.
Last, but certainly not least, leaky pipes are also a sign that your plumbing needs to be replaced.
We won’t harp on this one too much, since it’s normally pretty obvious if there is leaking; however, there are some signs to look for that you might not have thought of.
Low water pressure is a sign that there might be some leakage. If water is coming out through a leak before it reaches the fixture, it’s obviously not going to gush out like normal.
If you notice your water bill getting super high, but you haven’t been doing anything different, your pipes might be leaking excess water too.
